2011 Annual Meeting—Sunday, August 21 at 5:00 PM
at the Molly Allison Sail House,
Berkeley & West Avenues

Mordecai Island is an uninhabited sedge island of approximately 45 acres located a few hundred feet west of Beach Haven.  It serves as a strategically important nesting island for many state threatened and endangered bird species, including one of the largest colonies of Black Skimmers on the eastern seaboard.

The Mordecai Land Trust is comprised of approximately 300 members from 15 states.  Its mission is to protect and preserve Mordecai Island through education, studies and active participation.  It recognizes the need to retard continued erosion of Mordecai Island as a benefit to the Beach Haven shoreline, keep it free of debris, and monitor and protect nesting and migrating birds, as well as fish in its nearby waters.

The Trust is dependent on grants, fundraisers and donations, including recent grants from the American Littoral Society through NOAA and the LBI Garden Club, to begin the physical process of restoring the southwestern edge of the island.  It is moving forward toward implementing a breakwater project on the northern edge, with help from the Army Corps of Engineers.  As it continues to grow through educational and community outreach programs, the Mordecai Land Trust believes that its efforts will have positive long term effects, not only by preserving Mordecai Island and its habitat, but also by creating public awareness of the beauty, importance and fragility of its natural environment.  Volunteers are welcome in any capacity.  For information on becoming a volunteer or member, contact Pat Miller at pmspatsy6@gmail.com or 609-492-4963.

Clean Ocean Action

The mission of Clean Ocean Action (COA) is to improve the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey/New York coast.  Clean Ocean Action identifies sources of pollution by using research, public education, and citizen action to convince our public officials to enact and enforce measures which will clean up and protect our ocean.  This 25 year young non-profit organization is a coalition of over 125 active boating, business, community, conservation, diving, environmental, fishing, religious, service, student, surfing, and women's groups.  These “Ocean Wavemakers” work together, under the guidance of COA’s Board of Trustees and staff to further protect our ocean.  The coalition accesses the expertise of its different members to provide the needed leadership and guidance required to attack each issue head-on.  Press events, rallies, letter writing campaigns, presentations, phone calls, testifying at public hearings, and distribution of literature and information at citizen action tables are just some of the ways COAlition members contribute to protecting our ocean from pollution and industrialization.  For more information on COA, please contact us at: www.CleanOceanAction.org or:

No need for re-treads of flip flops or sneakers and, more importantly, no more need for throwing them away and despoiling our environment.  You can send old sneakers, flip flops and the like to Nike’s “Reuse A Shoe” Program which collects old shoes of any brand and gives them new life as athletic surfaces such as playgrounds, running tracks, tennis courts, etc.  To date, the program has kept more than 13 million pairs of shoes out of landfills.  For more information on how to participate, log onto www.nikereuseashoe.com

The New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS) is a privately supported, not-for profit, statewide membership organization. Founded in 1897, and one of the oldest independent Audubon societies, NJAS has no connection with the National Audubon Society.

The New Jersey Audubon Society fosters environmental awareness and a conservation ethic among New Jersey's citizens; protects New Jersey's birds, mammals, other animals, and plants, especially endangered and threatened species; and promotes preservation of New Jersey's valuable natural habitats.

In order to achieve its purpose, New Jersey Audubon, through its Board of Directors, professional staff, members, and volunteers, endeavors to:

  • Develop, encourage, and support sound conservation practices, programs, and legislation.
  • Disseminate information on the natural environment through education programs, information services, and publications.
  • Advance knowledge of New Jersey's flora and fauna, and their relationships to the habitats on which they depend, through field research.
  • Acquire, establish, and maintain wildlife sanctuaries and educational centers.

The objectives of the Society are implemented by its professional staff under the leadership of its Executive Director and supervision of an elected, voluntary Board of Directors.

NJAS maintains stewardship of 34 sanctuaries and conducts its programs through ten staffed facilities.
